A Changing City:

A city is always changing. But those changes can be for the better or for the worse.

Exeter is an historic city, but it was badly damaged during the Second World War. Some would say even more damage was done in the 1960s when wanton demolition replaced large parts of the city with shoddy and unattractive architecture.

Thankfully, standards have improved but there is still a need to monitor new development.

Exeter Civic Society was set up to care for Exeter and make sure that further redevelopment is of the highest possible standard for our city and for our quality of life.

Exeter Civic Society is an independent and non-party political organisation.

We Need Your Help:

Exeter needs people who care about Exeter. If you are too busy to give your time you can still help by joining us and lending your support.

It's a great way to keep abreast of local issues.

What do we do?

We press for

• high standards and good design for buildings through the scrutiny of planning applications
• a better transport system
• the planting of trees, plants and bulbs
• respect for historic Exeter
• promotion of the natural environment
• the preservation of important buildings and open spaces

In addition we provide

• regular public meetings and visits for members.
• a quarterly newsletter delivered to your door to keep you up-to-date with local issues
• a number of publications  that give a fascinating glimpse of different aspects of Exeter
