Exeter Civic Society

Blue Plaque unveiling on 7th March 2019

The unveiling of the next Civic Society blue plaque will take place at 12.30 on Thursday 7 March at the Spicer Road entrance to the Maynard School. We will be celebrating the life and work of Stephen Simpson (1869-1954) the inventor of the coin-operated gas meter and a major benefactor for the reconstruction of Exeter Cathedral during and after Word War 2. He lived in Tregear, now the arts block of the Maynard School, from 1899 to 1912. Born into a Mansfield family of engineers, he came to Exeter in 1894 to work for Willey and Co. and his more than 200 patents were a mainstay for the firm, at one time the largest employer in Exeter, of which he became chairman until he retired in 1953. The suspension bridge at Trew’s Weir is due to his initiative and he was also a keen local historian, 15 volumes of his transcripts from the National Archives being held in the Devon Heritage Centre.
